Athletics Weekly 18-12-08
Note from Charles Stuart Chairman, rounding off 2008 on a high note in its UK Club relay rankings our club has done fantastic:
4 x 100 U17 Men 4th with 43.9s,
4 x 100 U17 Women 7th with 50.3
4 x 300 U17 Women 15th.
Well done to all who participated.
Trials and Tribulations in Combined Events, (Ashleigh Wood).
Having qualified at the Regional Schools Championships at Doncaster in June with a score of 4342 points in the Inter Girls Heptathlon, Ashleigh competed at Birmingham in September with a field of 39 athletes from all regions of England. For once the weather decided to behave itself and as Ashleigh was the sole Cleveland athlete in the Championships, the North Eastern Counties of Northumberland, Durham and Cleveland athletes sat together, encouraging each other. It was agreed as a combined North Eastern Counties team we could possibly challenge the bigger counties. We can dream.
Ashleigh started her journey with one of her favourite event, but her long legs especially after another growth spurt, meant she now had great difficulty negotiating the 80m Hurdles together with a questionable 4th position, put her in 7th place after the first event. Onto the High Jump which was the event which brought Ashleigh into athletics. It has not been a good year for Ashleigh in this event although she has a PB of 1m60. Again the growth spurt had affected her run up, its back to basics during the winter. Ashleigh dropped to 16th place. The next event was the Shot, originally one of her weaker events but some hard work over the season, especially with David Dawson's guidance, saw her achieve a PB 9m34 bring her up to 11th place.
With the inside lane for the 200m, a nightmare for long legged athletes and competing in a quality race much faster than Ashleigh had experienced before, she finished the day in 8th position.
Much encouraged by this position Ashleigh looked forward to the second day, the first event was the Long Jump with good performances during the season, it was hoped this would be a god point earner, however none of the NE competitors did well and were given dubious jumps. Ashleigh pulled herself together and did a safe 2nd jump, going for a more ambitious jump for her 3rd, which was given as a no jump. With the officials appearing to be more interested on their own conversations, observed by many coaches and parents, it was a bitter disappointment she dropped to 10th position with her 2 least favourite events the Javelin and 800m to follow. The bad luck continued in the Javelin with 2 no throws given, not helped with all the girls saying the 2nd throw was a good one, Ashleigh concentrated on going for a throw and not playing it safe archived a valid throw, Ashleigh dropped to 12th place but expected worse.
In the final event, the 800m Ashleigh found herself running on her own in her heat but managed to achieve a PB and keep her 12th position.
On reflection Ashleigh
was pleased with her performance and her attitude, necessary in multi events, ''you pick yourself up, dust yourself down and start all over again'', this was a big learning curve. Next year Ashleigh will be in the senior girls age group, the only event which changes is the Hurdles to 100m which is more suited to her physique. 80mH 12.21, HJ 1.51m, Shot 9.34m, 200m 26.67, LJ 4.87m, Javelin 20.26m, 800m 2:40.62, 800m 2:40.62. Overall Points 4013.
Not bad for an off day, at the end of a long season, still 7th on the UK Power of 10, Well Done Ashleigh.

Sprint Relay Festival, Monkton Stadium, 17th September, 2008
The inaugural England Athletics (North East) Sprint Relay Festival was held at Monkton Stadium, Jarrow on September 17 th . An impressive 51 teams from across the region entered the event, which featured the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 events for athletes aged under 13 through to senior.
An excellent turn out of both composite and club teams, many travelling from as far as Middlesbrough, Hexham and Alnwick to compete, witnessed Middlesbrough Mandale AC take first place with 24 points, closely followed by Durham City Harriers & AC with 22 points. Birtley AC finished third with 14 points, adding to the England Athletics participation award which they won alongside Chester le Street AC for the highest number of entrants within the junior events.
The event was a joint collaboration between England Athletics (North East) and the Event Management Group for Speed, an organisation which works closely with the Governing Body with responsibility for the development of event specific coach and athlete initiatives.
Neil Cameron, Performance & Development Coordinator for England Athletics, commented “The Relay Festival provided a fitting end to what has been a very successful summer track season for the North East. The large number of entries, from across the region, is evidence that such an event is welcomed by the Athletics community, and I hope that the Event Management Group alongside England Athletics can build upon the success of the event in years to come”.

Eighteen year old Charlie Dryden had a day to remember at the Moorways Stadium in Derby
The talented athlete from Stokesley showed he had more strings to his bow than simply jumping when taking part in the National Junior League Grand Prix final for 2008.
Competing in the season long competition to find the best all round under 20 athlete in the league Dryden qualified for the final in fourth place but pulled out all the stops to win the Gold Medal on the day.
Dryden started the day just one centimetre short of his best ever in the Long Jump with a leap of 6.72 metres. He then turned his attention to the track where he ran two lifetime bests in the 100 and 200 metres turning in times of 11.23 and 22.66 seconds respectively. A delighted Dryden said after the event “I didn't expect to do so well today and I am over the moon”. He will now look to the 2009 season where he hopes to defend his title in twelve months time.
The best of Teessides young athletes put on a magnificent show in the inter counties under 17 under 15 championships held at Carlisle.
Competing against six other teams from the North East of England and the South of Scotland the team achieved several personal bests and event wins to eventually place second to the host team Cumbria.
In the under 15 boys age group Lee Burrell (Middlesbrough AC) scored a notable sprint double winning the 100 and 200m. Whilst Joel Dixon (Nunthorpe School) won the High Jump with school mate Jordan Gill set a personal a personal best in the Long Jump. Ian Swall (Middlesbrough AC) took the Discus honours.
For the girls at under 15 level Eleanor Mullen (Middlesbrough AC) was in the best form of her young career when placing 3 rd in the 100 metres in a time of 12.91 seconds. Emily fields (Middlesbrough AC) placed second in the 800 metres and in the field Vanessa Jacques (Middlesbrough AC) and Shelley Thompson-Lane (Macmillan Academy scored vital points in the field events.
In the under 17 men's team Joseph Cox (Middlesbrough AC) got the meeting off to a flying start winning the first event of the match in the 400m hurdles. In doing so Cox broke his lifetime best by over 1.5 seconds to move up to 32 nd place in this years UK rankings. Harry Harris and Ben Stevenson (Middlesbrough AC) placed second in the 100 and 200 metres respectively both recording seasons best times. Harris and Stevenson then combined Cox and Nikhi Ncube to take the 4 x 100 metres relay by over 30 metres. In the field Ben Daley (Middlesbrough AC) claimed third places in the Discus and Javelin before going on to win his speciality the Hammer.
In the final age group the under 17 women English Schools Champion Kayleigh Mills (Middlesbrough AC) put injury worries behind her to take the Hammer event. Whilst UK Schools Bronze medallist Ashleigh Wood (Middlesbrough AC) won the Long Jump and the Sprint Hurdles. North East Champion Sofiya Pela (Middlesbrough AC) put in a strong run in the 300m taking second place as did Kate Welford (Middlesbrough AC) when running under 26 seconds to claim second in the 200m. In the distance events Rebecca Macguire ran bravely to take second place in the 1500 metres in difficult conditions.
Cleveland Schools multi event athletes Nick Phelps and Ashleigh Wood go to Birmingham to compete in the English Schools Combined Events Championships.
Wood 16 is ranked in the 7 th in the UK in the pentathlon and will be looking to improve on her life time best score of 4342 points. The talented Wood is also ranked
fourth in the Long Jump and then 13th in the Long Jump.
Seventeen year old Nick Phelps will be competing at Birmingham in the Decathlon aiming to improve on his best of 5389 points. Better known as a 400m hurdler ranked fourth in that event in the North East he also has impressive personal bests of 11.2 seconds 100m and 50.60 in the 400 metres.

Rick Betts
Middlesbrough AC athletes at the UK School Games were in fine form at the Bristol University athletics track.
Kayleigh Mills won the bronze medal in Hammer competition whilst clubmate Ashleigh Wood repeated the feat
by taking the Bronze in the Long Jump. Chloe Gill was unlucky to miss out on a medal in the Triple Jump Despite
improving her personal best for that distance by 16 centimetres and Jayme Norton was also unlucky to miss out
on a place in the individual 300m final when running the ninth fastest time of the qualifying rounds.

Finished 4th with 6841 points in the NJAL Grand Prix. After turning out to every junior match and putting in lots of great performances he will now be invited as one of the top eight finalist's to compete at the grand prix final on 14th sept at Derby. So good luck Charlie, it shows hard work really does pay off.
2008 Senior team promotion match playoff position
Thank you to all athletes that have competed for the men's and women's senior team this year. Ultimately the team finished in second place, behind a really strong City of York team that will no doubt be promoted back up into the Northern first division from which they came down from after last year.
Our second place has once again guaranteed us a place at the promotion match for the Northern first division, for I think the 4th season running. Unfortunately half of our team will not be available on that particular day, due to several other commitments on an already very busy weekend; therefore we have decided not to enter our team for the promotion match this year as we feel it is a long way to travel in a match that we could not realistically contend in.
It is regrettable that the club could not produce a strong team on possible the most important match of the season and so I ask all athletes, coaches and officials to try to make themselves available for the promotion match next season, which will probably be in the last weekend in August or the first weekend in September.
Thank you

Glen Blenkinsop (Senior Men) and Rachel Fairless (Senior Women)
From Michele Sullivan,
I would just like to thank all the athletes, officials, coaches and 'M & D Travel' for making my first season as Tees Valley Tigers
manager an enjoyable one. Well done to everyone who competed over the four matches, we saw great performances through out, loads of pb's for most of you. It show's all the hard work you and your coaches put in really does work. Keep up the good work.
Officials and Coaches, Obviously I can't name you all personally, I would be here forever but you all know who you are.
A massive Thank You to you all as matches couldn't go ahead without you. And finally thanks to 'M & D Trave'.l who gave us good prices and comfortable buses for our three matches to Carlisle. I know the sucess can carry on next year and we should have a bigger team with plenty of u17's coming through, so who know where we might end up. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK ALL OF YOU.

28th - 29th June, ESAA Combined Events, NE regional finals Doncaster
The above meeting is the qualifying competition for the ESAA National Combined Events Championship Finals, which take place in Birmingham on the 20th - 21st September 2008.

Ashleigh Wood (Intermediate Girls) and Nick Phelps (Senior Boys), took part in the Doncaster competition, representing Cleveland Schools and both qualified for the finals in Birmingham, but sadly their achievements appear to have had no recognition either locally or even the Power of 10 which is supposed to rank all achievements. They were a credit to there county and their athletic club.
Ashleigh competed in the Heptathlon 7 events over 2 days and was in the top 3 for the whole of the competition, achieving 3 PB's and gained her 2nd place out of 18 with an excellent score of 4342 points.
This would appear to put her in 5th place in the rankings.
Day 1 - 80m Hurdles 11.4, PB High Jump 1.54, Shot 8.58, PB 200m 26.00.
Day 2 - Long Jump 5.62, PB Javelin 23.79, 800m 2.48.1.
Ashleigh has entered the U17 Heptathalon Championships in Birmingham on the 16th- 17th August in preparation for the finals in Birmingham in September.
Nick completed the Decathlon - 10 events over 2 days and was in the top 4 for the whole of the competition, achieving 8 PB's, gained 3rd place with an excellent score of 5389 points in his first decathlon. Nick archived a PB in the Javelin over 30m, but because of a heavy downpour the competition was restarted and this throw did not count! This would have given Nick 2nd place instead of 3rd.
Day 1 - 100m 11.2 PB, Long Jump 5.85 PB, Shot 9.79, PB High Jump 1.72 PB, 400m 51.2 PB.
Day 2 - 100m Hurdles 16.0, PB Discus 19.19, Pole Vault 3.00 PB Javelin 27.40, 1500m 4.39.0 PB.

Well done Ashleigh and Nick.

Well done to all athletes on a fantastic team performance which lead
the club to 1st position and what will leave a tense final day (20th
July) to try and gain promotion. The conditions were terrible for all the athletes with a blowing gail,
which blew down numerous trees and cancelled both the discus and
hammer throws.
Highlights of the day included:
Rachael Highfield and Eleanor Mullen completed the sprint double in
the under 13 and under 15 age groups, Kate Welford produced once again in winning the under 17 sprint double
with Jess Kennedy claiming both sprint wins in the B race
Alex Grundsman moved up a distance from 800m to 1500m where he won
very easily and also a win in the 200m, Shaun McCartney won the under 17 boys 200m and long jump whilst
Ashleigh Stone won the womens long jump. Joe Cox and Greg Jackson continued their battle in under 17's 400m
with Joe coming out on top on this occasion. Patrick O'Connor was up to his usual self winning under 13 boys
hurdles, high jump and 800m
Both Emily Fields and Jessica Wilkinson won the under 15's girls
middle distance races in the shape of the 800m and 1500m. Ashleigh Wood warmed up this years English Schools with a comfortable
win in the under 17's girls hurdles with team-mate Christina O'Connor in 2nd place.
Also English Schools throwers Ian Swall, Matthew Potts and Rachael
Goodier threw fantastically well.
NYAL returns to Clairville on 20th July the last meeting of the season
where I hope all athletes can turn out to try gain promotion to the
Premier League for next season.
Many Thanks,
Team Manager,
Andrew Maguire

Sofia's Golden Treble
Six young athletes from Teesside representing Durham at the Clubs for Young People, National Athletics Championships in Telford certainly had a day to remember on Saturday.
Representing Middlesbrough's Wellington ABC the six came away with no fewer than fourteen medals including four golds.
Sixteen year old
Sofiya Pela-aliyu from Middlesbrough put behind her the recent disappointment of not being selected for the Cleveland Schools athletics team for the forthcoming English School Championships by setting an unprecedented performance by becoming the first Teeside athlete to win three individual Gold Medals on the track when taking first place in the 100, 200, and 300 metres races.
Pela-aliyu then returned to be part of the silver medal winning 4 x 100m relay team.
The other Gold medal in performance came from the unlikely source of 12 year old
Ashley Gray from Yarm. The Yarm school pupil put in a tremendous performance as a last minute substitute to take the Gold in the boys 200 metres.
Another athlete who would be ruing last weeks terrible weather conditions in Middlesbrough is fifteen year
Joe Cox from Ingleby Barwick. Cox who could only manage 53.7 seconds when winning the young athletes match at Clairville stadium last week smashed his personal best fro the distance at Telford to win the Silver medal in a time of 52.50 seconds.
Brother and sister duo
Katy and
Jack Farrow from Middlesbrough took well earned medals in their track events. Katy taking the silver medal in the 1500m whilst younger brother Jack took bronze in the 800m and sprint relay.
The final member of the group to put in a medal winning performance was
Sam Norton from Yarm. Norton younger brother of Cleveland Schools record holder
Jayme took the Silver medal over 100 metres before combining with 200 metre winner Gray to take another Silver in the relay event.
The performances of the young athletes enabled the athletes representing Durham to win 5 of the 8 team trophies on offer at the Chamiponships. Team Manager Simon Healey was overwhelmed by the performances and said “its been a great day for the team and the area and the children did us proud”

Middlesbrough AC's
Kayleigh Sullivan fresh from her personal best performance in the Cleveland Schools Championships on the saturday had to settle for 5 th place in the Hammer event on the sunday with a performance just below her new seasons best.
In the men's track events Richard Kilty (Gateshead) continued his impressive form winning the 100 metres in 10.63 seconds. The Middlesbrough AC quartet of
Nick Phelps,
Adam Morrell,
Andrew Macguire and
Richard Morrell made the finals of their respective events.
Phelps finished sixth in the 400m Hurdles whilst

Adam Morrell finished fourth and fifth respectively in the under 20 800 metres. In the senior 800 metres

Charlie Dryden narrowly missed out on a medal in the under 20 Long Jump with a distance of 6.65 metres but returned the next day to take a well earned silver medal in the Triple Jump event with a distance of 13.28 metres.

Match 2 Senior team 07.06.08 Jarrow
Thank you to the athletes and officials that showed up for the senior match at Jarrow on Saturday. The team was hit very badly with many of our athletes absent due to injuries. But our 6 male and 8 female athletes rose to the challenge to cover a total of 49 events between them (27 events plus both relays for the 8 women, and 20 events for the 6 men).
A special thank you to
Hayley Braithwaite,
Claire Turnbull and
Frances Hubbard for competing in as many events as the rules allow, and with the male and female field athletes, helped us to be in 2 nd place after 22 events. Unfortunately, there are only so many events 14 athletes can do, and the lack of numbers resulted in us finishing 4 th overall on the day.
Congratulations to our regular thrower
Kayleigh Sullivan for achieving PB's in the Hammer (44.69m), Discus (33.54m) and Javelin (29.99m), lets hope the senior matches continue to be so valuable for you and all the other athletes that have produced good performances for the team and themselves. Also that at the next match, again at Jarrow in 4 weeks, we can produce the team that we all know the club has, and we can then show these other teams the quality that we have at this club.

NYAL 18th May Barnsley
The Middlesbrough AC Young athlete's team enjoyed a successful if controversial weekend when competing at Bingley recently. The team finished in second place. However club officials believe that once the results have been checked and scrutinized first place is a distinct possibility.
The club are presently in fourth place in the league standings with only the first two guaranteed promotion. So a strong performance in the next match at Doncaster this weekend is essential to help to ensure a fighting chance of promotion to the Northern Premier league for the 2009 season.
In the under 13 boy's section winners for the club were Matthew Routh 100 metres, Patrick O'connor 800 metres and High Jump Ashley Grey 800 metres and Shot Putt, Dan Shippey Long Jump and Sam Norton Shot Putt. For the under 13 Girls Rachel Highfield scored a sprint double winning the 75 and 150 metres, Laura Simpson winning over 75metres and Kim Carson and Hannah Maclaren winning the 800 metres and High Jump respectively.
Moving up to the under 15 age group Richard Hodgson and Donald Hall were in commanding form in the boys sprints winning both sprint races with ease. In the discus Ian Swall won with an impressive throw by over 5 metres and Fola Ajegkibe was another good points scorer in the winning the Shot Putt. The Middlesbrough AC girls were also in fine form in this age category with another sprint double coming from Hannah Seagrave in the B 100 and 200 metres and her training partner Eleanor Mullen winning the a 100m in a very fast time. Emily Fields and Lauren Cuggy were outstanding in winning their 800 metre races in style. While Jess Wilkinson and Catherine Meynell won their races at 1500 metres.
At under 17 level the clubs track athletes showed their dominance by winning every flat track race in which the four athletes competed. Greg Jackson won the double in the 100 and 400 metres, Shaun McCartney winning the 100 and 200 metres and also the Long Jump. Nikhi Ncube had impressive runs winning the 400 metres and 200 metres while Joe Cox claimed wins in the 200 and 800 metres. In the field Ben Daley had a double winning the Shot and Javelin events. Completing this section for the boys Greg Jackson put in a fine performance winning the B Long Jump.
Not to be outdone by the boys the under 17 Girls section contributed greatly to the clubs points tally with no fewer than eleven wins.
Kate Welford gained a fast sprint double over 100 and 200 metres and won the B shot event.
Jess Kennedy winning the B 100 metres in under 13 seconds.
Ashleigh Wood was again in excellent form winning the B 200m and winning the A Shot, Hurdles and Triple Jump. The latter being a lifetime best performance, which lifts her into the UK top 20 for the event along with team-mates
Chloe Gill and
Ashleigh Stone. Another winner was
Rebecca Macguire who took the 1500 metre race. Multi event athlete
Christina O'Connor was also a multi event winner in taking the B sprint hurdles and setting a new personal best winning the B Triple Jump.

We travelled once again to Carlisle for the second NJAL match and enjoyed a very
pleasant day of athletics, where everyone was willing to help the team; Tees Valley Tigers.
With a full compliment of officials, some of us were able to enjoy a lazy day as spectators
although our busy team manager seemed to have a "twin" with her as she was constantly 'to and fro' to "declations" and appearing to be in two places at once, checking and supporting all the team
members.
The sun was out for a change, but performances were affected by the strong wind and athletes quickly resorted to filling in events to gain points. We had a smaller team with some of our Under
17s. who had travelled to the first match, competing at the Northern Championships at Wigan.
But with athletes trying events for the first time and all gelling as a team we maintained our respectable 3rd match position behind the two very strong Scottish clubs.

Northern Athletics U17/U15 Champs 2008 Robin Park, Wigan 24/25 May
The ladies of Middlesbrough AC (Mandale) were in fine form at the North of England under 17 Championships held at Wigan at the weekend.
The small group of 5 athletes won three gold medals one bronze and a fourth place.
Gold medallists on the first day came in due to the form of
Kayleigh Mills in the under 17 Hammer throw and
Chloe Gill in the Triple Jump. The clubs bronze medallist on the track came from
Jayme Norton in the under 17 Girls 300m and in doing so Norton ran a personal best and was well inside the qualifying time for July's English schools championships at Gateshead. Unluckiest athlete was
Ashleigh Stone who narrowly missed out on a medal in the Triple jump taking fourth place. On the second day the clubs only competitor was
Ashleigh Wood and it was
Ashleigh Wood who dealt with the pressure of being fastest entrant to claim the Gold in a time just outside her UK best leading performance of 11.52 seconds.

Senior Team Selection, York 03.05.08
Thank you to all those who competed or helped with the senior match at York on Saturday 3rd May. It was a difficult day due to late changes to the timetable and several athletes missing from our first match, but everyone worked hard for themselves and the team, with every athlete completing at least 2 events, and some doing much more. Next time we'll get Gateshead's A/B team.

Could any athletes who wish to compete for the senior team this year please spend a few moments to complete the following form regarding which events they would be willing to participate in, and on which dates they may be available for selection.
This form is just a way to make it easier for the team managers to organise the team and contact athletes regarding dates, travel and event selection, and it does not mean that the athlete is agreeing to take part in specific events on specific dates. So you are free to drop out or sign up for more at any time you wish (hopefully the latter).
To clear up any uncertainty regarding how the senior team will be selected below are the main points to decide places should competition for places become intense:
· Athletes are selected based on recent performances (over the past 4 weeks if necessary).
· When the A and B competitors are from different ages groups, the athlete with the better performances recently will be chosen as the A competitor and the other athlete with be the B competitor (as the club is obliged to place the stronger of the two athletes in the A competition).
