Field Event Competitors – Guidance Notes Track & Field
Spotlight on Ben Stephenson, U17M 200m, continues his progress in 2009 with a well earned Bronze medal at Bedford 8th - 9th August, running his 2nd fastest time of the season 22.22s behind Liam Clowes 'Crew & Nantwich' 21.68s the Northern Counties 200m Champion and Jordon Arthur 21.98s 'Enfield' the ESAA Champion. The trio entered the straight in their finishing order all three pulling away from the joint 4th and 5th athletes who registed 22.48s.

Ben continues his season representing the club over 200m in the North of England, Promotion Match on the 16th August then the Northern Junior League Promotion Match on the 30th August, his season finishes with him representing Yorkshie & Humberside in the UK School Games.

Ben taking the silver medal at the UK School Games 200m on 5th - 6th Sept at Cardiff.

Junior League Promotion Match, Robin Park, Wigan, rain storm drenches athletes and officials but there are no tears for the Middlesbrough AC (Mandale) team.
At the start of our expedition we were transported to the outskirts of Wigan by MD Travel who have been the clubs preferred Coach Company, this was to be the precursor to an overnight stay at an hotel, so our athletes could be as fresh as possible. Otherwise it could have been a 6.00am start out from Clairville. The accommodation was brilliant the evening meal was enjoyable; chittar chatter later beckoned some to early reposes and dawn greeted the early bird awakeners to a hearty breakfast for the forthcoming match.

The team arrived well in front of the opposition, walking through the tunnel onto the stands, making our first choice of the day where do we sit together? By the finishing line looks about right. Next problem where do we sign in for officials? All was located, sorted and taking in our setting, could this be a good sign; we are seated in front of the Jonathan Edwards suit.

The scene is set, we knew the pathway like the back of our hands, walking across a manicured empty in field, feeling the earth beneath our feet, watching a barge boat float off in the distance, we walked the tow path standing by a lock gate thinking of what's to come. Is this going to be a gold medal day for us? Are we going to be in first position at the end of the match?

Field events begin and good results start rolling in for the club points start mounting, but it felt slow, everything is in slow motion, reason because it's a well organised day. Events are running more or less to time. Midpoint, points are stacking up in our favour and we are well ahead in first place, then crises hits were slipping, second place, a concerned Michelle 'sounds like third place', faces are dropping. From the opposite side of the track you can hear Michelle bellowing her encouragement above everyone else's voices and the occasional roar of laughter; things seem to be looking up again.

The weather turns bad, it was expected, but not for the officials and poor athletes still competing, struggling through the torrential downpour. Why again do Middlesbrough AC (Mandale) officials seem to get the events when it rains? The same happened at Gateshead at a delayed Javelin event. Everyone else left that day; can we call it day today and go home? we were soaking wet through, we soldered on.

The closing relays and it's to close to call. There's no feedback from the recorders box, however, on taking the penultimate result up there's a smile from Grace and foxy look from Andy, could we be in with a chance, second place maybe?

Because of the bad weather the announcer asks for everyone to come together in the indoor track for the presentations.

The atmosphere is charged; first the athletes of the match are announced.

The build up continues.

6th place is announced which went to Doncaster with 219 points cheers ring out, 5th Rotherham 348 applause, 4th Wakefield 391.

With baited breath it's getting interesting for us. 3rd Liverpool 499, gosh we made it! The first two clubs get promoted! Time stands still, the prize presenter indicated it had been a very close finish and in second place Preston with 541. A euphoric cheer comes from our team. We are first!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A hush. Back to the announcer.

Well you've guessed it by now Middlesbrough AC with 552 are the winners (wow only 11 points between us and Preston).

You can see and feel the outpouring of emotion from the team especially from the team manager Michelle. Ashleigh and Elliott are asked to go up to take the trophy on behalf of the club; an even bigger cheer goes up when they receive it.

Attending the match was the son of the late Ron Simmons, Mark, he noted the team spirit of the athletes pointing out that ‘Nick and Elliot who could hardly run at the end of their events, had run their socks off', which he felt summed up the essence of the team on the day.

Before we made our way home our club chairman, Charles, thanked everyone involved. He praised the team, ‘today had been a day to remember, there were gutsy performances, and he applauded them all. We had stiff opposition but had prevailed to win the match and return to the Premiere Division which they and the club rightly deserved'.

Glen Blenkinsop our Pole Vault Coach and retiring senior men's team manager added his comment ‘we did well'.

Team manager Michelle Sullivan summed up her feelings on the match and the season saying ‘it had been a fantastic end to an equally fantastic season, she praised each and every one of the athletes that had competed for the Junior team, as without them we could not have achieved the success of the day and will go on to better this performance in the other leagues we are involved in next season, the planning of which starts now'.

A special note of thanks should go from the club to Michelle for organising beforehand all the Wigan arrangements which went very smoothly. She never stopped from getting on the bus on Saturday afternoon until drop off on Sunday evening. Michelle needs the backing off all the club athletes, officials, coaches and parents for next season as she is proposing to take on the management of all the leagues which is a daunting task but if we all pull together we can achieve anything.

Lastly a big thank you, to all the officials and helpers, who have assisted us throughout the Track and Field outdoor season. Without you we can't compete. You are an integral part of the team and we could always do with extra help so here is the plug! If you've got time and attend matches as a spectator, the offer of your services would be greatly appreciated.

Events that we would be officiating at would run even smother and to schedule and then the officials can get to watch and enjoy more of match's, as an incentive officials traveling on the team coaches don't pay and get a lunch from the home teams.

Post script; keep an eye on the website for details of the qualifying matches for the men's team in the BAL and the women's team in the UKWAL.

Finally: Athletics can be seen as a metaphor for life, because you get out of it what you put into it. Middlesbrough AC (Mandale) ‘ higher, faster, longer, further there's a place for everyone'.

Take your pictures down and hang another trophy up, truth or consequence say it out loud

These are my hero' Middlesbrough AC (Mandale), watch them as they go
These are my hero' Middlesbrough AC (Mandale), they are not ordinary

Don't the best of them bleed it out, while the rest of the opposition peter out
Kudos for the hero' leading all the rest, you know my hero' their Middlesbrough AC (Mandale)

Marino Rea Danilowicz

In depth analysis, Middlesbrough Athletics Club's junior team travelled to Wigan to compete in the National Junior League, Northern area promotion match and came away with a hard earned victory.

Ashleigh and Jess provide Schools Silver Lining
The English Schools Athletics Championships took place July in Sheffield with with local athletes representing both Cleveland and North Yorkshire posting some impressive results.

Senior Girls: Ashleigh Wood stormed through her first round heat in the sprint hurdles to record a fine time of 14.25 seconds to go into Saturdays final as second fastest qualifier. In the final Wood again beat her previous personal best, to run 14.45 seconds to claim the silver medal. Earlier in the day Jessica Russon had ran an exceptionally strong race over 3000 metres to win Cleveland's first medal of the Championships. Russon ran the race of her young life to take over eight seconds from her previous best time to claim the silver medal in a time of 9 minutes 41.68 behind British Universities Champion Charlotte Purdue of Hampshire.

Top Cleveland performance on the first day came from Russell Best in the senior boys 3000 metres. Best ran a brave race to finish in fourth place in a time of 8 minutes 35.69 seconds. Elliot Jackson was another who excelled on previous performances with a personal best run of 6 minutes 8 seconds in the 2000m Steeplechase final, finishing in fourth place. Nick Phelps qualified for his 400 metre hurdles final in style running just outside of his personal best with a time of 55.27 seconds. Carsons training partner at Clairvlle stadium Ben Stephenson fared better over 200 metres, Stephenson (North Yorkshire) recorded at time of 22.27 seconds in his heat he then ran 22.25 seconds in his semi final culminating in another consistent run of 22.22 seconds in the final to narrowly miss out on a medal with fourth place.. Patrick O'Connor cleared 1 metre 64 centimetres in the High Jump in what will be the first of many English Schools appearances. Andrew Thwaites in the discus threw a distance of 29.93 metres.

Gateshead open minor meetings - track and field full results, more>>
Ashleigh Wood as one of the top ranked under 17y 80m hurdlers of 2008 Ashleigh was invited to compete in special hurdles races over 2'6' hurdles (under 17 years) and 100m distance (juniors) at the Loughbrough match 17th May and the Bedford International Games 31st May.

Such an invitation was in recognition of her excellent hurdles performance in 2008, whilst introducing her to a higher standard of competition and an opportunity to compete against good hurdlers which does not happen too frequently in the NE.

Ashleigh has adapted well to the Junior 100m Hurdles this season but without opposition and it would appear she is more suited to 2'9' hurdles and longer distance. Racing over the lower hurdles, whilst not really suitable to her now, gave her a rare opportunity to have some good competition and she accepted the invitations with delight and indeed relished the opportunity.

With possible selection for the World Youth Games as the prize for the top 2009 under 17 - 2nd years/Junior - 1st year hurdlers were invited to compete, and they had to gain a very high standard of 13.90 secs to be eligible for selection. Despite the excellent competition no one achieved the required standard. At neither meeting, one run in the rain and the other in glorious sunshine, the fastest time was 13.91 sec's. The selectors are proposing another run off at Watford in the near future.

Ashleigh found her start on both occasions was a weakness against fast opposition who appear to have the opportunity to compete against each other regularly.Ashleigh
enjoyed the experience (times were Loughbrough 14.55 Bedford 14.79) remembering that she is a multi eventer, competing against specialist hurdlers, I am delighted that Ashleigh is prepared to take on good opposition to help her improve her performances.

With these races out of the way Ashleigh can concentrate on the other events which make up the multi event program ( 100mh/hj/shot/200m - 1st day LJ/Javelin/800m - 2nd day) in preparation for the regional schools multi event championships which take place at Jarrow 27 - 28 June, hopefully to gain a place at the National Finals later in the year.

Jean Simmons Coach

Ben Stephenson, U17 Sprinter, has excelled with a win in the North Yorkshire Schools Championships at York 13th June, setting a new Championship record of 22.3 seconds in the 200m. This follows Ben's Silver medal run in the North of England Championships at Gateshead on 23rd May where he also set a personal best of 22.12seconds. This takes him to 5th on the National Rankings and bodes well for the big races to come later this season.

On a separate front from his winning ways in the U17 age group of the McCains YAL Ben also shows a great Club commitment in his support of the Junior and NoE Senior League teams by racing his chosen and related events for them.

NE Counties Athletic Association Track & Field Championships 9th - 10th May.
The most successful Teesside based club of the weekend was Middlesbrough AC Mandale with 44 medals in total 18 of them Gold. In the field events Helen Corrigan was in superb form when setting a new Championship best performance in the under 17 women's hammer. In doing so Corrigan led Middlesbrough AC athletes to a clean sweep in that event with Heather Johnson and Catherine Meynell taking the silver and bronze.

Kate Welford was in superb form over the weekend on the track running the fastest time of the day on a very windy Saturday to take the under 17 women's 200m in a time that would have won both the senior and under races. Welford then returned on the Sunday to dominate the 300 metre event. Other double winners at the championships were Ashleigh Wood in the under 20 women's hurdles and long jump, a very impressive Rachel Highfield in the under 15 girls 100m and 200 metres and Ben Daley who took the unusual double of the u17 and u20 men's hammer events.

The only senior gold medal for the club came from Kayleigh Sullivan in the women's discus. Sullivan then went on to take bronze medals in the hammer, shot and javelin events. Gold medals were also taken at under 20 level by Nick Phelps in the 400 metres, Grant Hawkins at 5000 metres and Sofiya Pela in the women's 400 metres. The gold medallists in the under 17 age group were Ashley Stone in the women's long jump and Christina O'Connor in the triple jump.

In the under 15 age category there were gold's from Sam Norton in the boys triple jump, Anna Jeiman in the hammer and Emelia Mack in the long jump. Silver medallists on the track included Richard Morrell (s/m 1500m), Jayme Norton (u20w 400m), Ashleigh Wood (under 20w 100m), Faye Winspear (senior w 100m), and Ashleigh Stone u17 (100m/ triple jump).

The team were placed first for most of the day, at the start of the discus the team fell back steadily to 4th place.

Things were starting to look grim, however at the penultimate event it was announced that the team had regained first place. An excited hush came over everyone could the athletes in the last event secure overall first place. Team manager Michelles, voice failing after encouraging team members all day, didn't care she only wanted the team to win, which they succeeded in doing with 17 points to spare. Well done all.

Highlight of the day was Rachel Goodier getting athlete of the match award, pictured with JAL team manager Michelle Sullivan.

Selecting This Will Lift You To The Top Of The PageWith the backdrop of glorious weather the Junior team were in magnificent form crushing the opposition teams from the start of the first events, the team had a healthy lead of fifty points more or less throughout the match.

At 1pm on ''Mandale Hill'' the day unfolded, could we possibly win this match and make it two out of two? Comment from the Hill ''don't read to much into the early results, remember we lost ground in the previous match at Wakfield during the middle part of the match, it might all depend on the closing events''. In the announcers box nerves were jittery apparently comedian ''Harry Hill'' was part of the team! this put a fun name to an unfurling fun day.

At 4pm you could see supporters and athletes tuning there mini radios into the relegation matches, could Middlesbrough FC avoid the drop, miracles can happen. 6pm not this time with heads bowed listerners tripped out of the arena as over the loudspeakers the final tally put Middlesbrough AC in a well disserved first place.

Congratulations to all that competed and officiated, can we get the same result at the next two matches, watch this space.

NJAL match 3 Cleckheaton 14.06.09
Despite a less than full strength team we only narrowly missed out on second place by 5 points, team manager Michele Sullivan praised all the athletes for their enthusiasm and endeavor on the day.

Despite coming third, we are still in overall first place. This is the first season we have competed as a team in our own name in the Pennine League, after competing for the past 3 years under the banner of Tees Valley Tigers composite team in the Tyne League.

Before the penultimate event Nick Phelps and Ashleigh Wood were recognised for their outstanding achievement and awarded athletes of the match.

The grand finale of this years series is on 26th July, again at Cleckheaton, where if we field a full strength team its possible that we can win this league at the first time of asking.

NJAL match 4 Cleckheaton 26.07.09

From the first announcement of the match points, 10 after the preliminary field events, then in increments of 20 and 30's, and with the background of the stuttering starters gun and intermittent rain, it was clear that the team were to record a magnificent dream feat, to be 157 clear points of their nearest rivals at the end of an exhilarating match. Fantastic performances too numerous to mention assured victory. The highlight of the match was the announcement that Charlie Dryden (pictured) was to receive the male athlete of the match award, this had been his first major league outing since April, because of an injury he sustained at an invitation athletic event in Malta.

The team now progresses to the promotion match in Wigan on the 30th of August at Robin Park. So that athletes don't have to start out early to travel prior to the match on the 29th an overnight stay is been planed at £20 per person, which includes shared room plus bf and transport. Contact Michelle Sullivan to book your place as soon as possible on 01642 518185 or 07837861835.

Commenting on the match Michelle (team manager) said ‘'it was a fantastic and brilliant result, it had been down to the talent of the athletes'', she added ‘'they had been a great bunch on and off the field at every match this season and had made the club proud''.

Club Chairperson Charles Stuart added his congratulations saying how ‘'delighted he was with the days result, the performance and attitude of the athletes had been exemplary, they had all gone that little bit further, it had been a magnificent all-round achievement''. He singled out the athletes who had entered multiple events, ‘'you know who you are''. Charles went on to thank all of the officials who have accompanied the squad throughout the season saying ‘'having a full compliment had maximised the points for the team, who could not have functioned without them'', and rounded up by giving a ‘'big thank you'' to the travelling band of parent supporters.

Well done to everyone that participated over the season.

Girls YAL Team Manager

The final league placings put us in 4th place behind York, Wakfield and Rotherham. Despite the rain I really enjoyed the match and I want to thank all the girls competing on Sunday for rallying round to cover as many events as possible. I know some athletes competed in events for the first time for the team and I felt there was an excellent team spirit as well as some great results.

It was disappointing not to come higher in the league but with half a team at he away matches 4th place was excellent and by many of you trying 'other' events the Club has discovered soome good performances, which can be taken forward to next year and hopfully can be built on.

I must thank all the officials who turned up again for the matches, yhus ensuring hard earned points werern't lost and special thanks to Marino for ensuring we had the Tent on duty. It was great also to see so many parents heeded our warning about no cover and arrived with an assortmat of tents. Your support is always welcome.

Over the 5 matches T Shirts have been presented to the girl athletes of the match which are as follows:

Kate Welford, Catherine Meynell, Tiffany Connor, Phillapa Stone, Emma Wartley.

Girls you were brilliant. Many thanks to all athletes, coaches, parents and supporters who turned up today. We worked as a team, dealing with the numerous changes and hopefully you all enjoyed the day. A win was a bonus.

Now on to the 2nd match at Grimsby on 17th May (only 2 weeks time). I will check with your coaches next Tuesday and Wednesday to see who can travel and who might go down by car, then working again with the coaches we will attempt to sort out a team.

No one is asked to compete in an event they cannot do or do not wish to do but if we can fill more events we could get more points as everyone competes gets at least 1 point if they register as a performance. Four events like this will get us the maximum 4 points available in an event, so please discuss the possibility of any additional events with your coaches.

I aim to have someone from Team Management available at least on Club Nights (Tuesday and Thursday) at Clarville between 5pm and 8pm, just to chat or deal with any queries.

Senior Match 4 Clarville 02 August
Senior team comes second behind Wakefield but in front of Gateshead to go promotion match. Rachel Fairless woman's team manager said at the end of todays match that she ‘'felt it had gone well and it was fabulous for the people in the team who had been there, everyone did above and beyond there duty''.

Chairman Charles Stuart and Chief timekeeper added he was chuffed to bits with the ‘'absolutely wonderful team spirit, it was an inspiration for all the club athletes, to get behind the team managers to take the club forward to the next stage in its development''.

Men's team manager Glen Blenkinsop added his thanks to all the athletes who competed for the senior team this year, especially to those athletes who have filled in for events that are not their usually disciplines just to fill empty places and ensure the team got more points, without all your hard work and commitment the team could not succeed. Also, thank you to all the volunteers who have helped officiate or run our home matches, sometimes through the wind and rain, you're as much apart of the team as each of the athletes on the track or in the field. Thanks to all your efforts the team has once again qualified for the Northern League Promotion match at Cleckheaton on Sunday 16th August.

The team will be going to the promotion match and a club bus will be available from Clairville Stadium, to leave at approx 8:30 (details still to be arranged), but our chances on the day depend on you all giving it just one more big push to fill the team, and of course perform on the day. We hope everyone can make it to the match, and that anyone who is unable to compete for whatever reason will be able to come along to support the team.

Rounding up for the match recorders, a special mention for the hard working team you don't see up in the announcers box producing the results, this season, Jon Simpson, Jackie Hay at the announcers mike when she's not shooting for England, not forgetting stalwart Michelle Sullivan who will be retiring from the imputing records side and concentrating on the team management. Not forgetting yours truly, normally you see him officiating and taking the odd photo for this website.

Last but not least to the Clarville staff, many thanks for having the equipment out ready for use on match days and also at training nights throughout the year, without them we would not possibly succeed as we have done this season or any other.

Senior team promotion match Cleckheaton 16th August
Chairman's Comments ''The team deserved a pat on the back for their endeavors, they should hold their heads up high for what they had achieved throughout the competition, it had been their efforts that had led to the team being there, however on the day we had succumbed to stronger teams who had fielded national and international athletes''.

Glen Blenkinsop (retiring senior team manager), The senior team missed out on promotion to the Northern Division 1 by just 39 points after a severely depleted team worked tirelessly to fill gaps for athletes that should have been present. All athletes who competed were a credit to the club, with many competing in several events that they have never tried before.

From early on in the match Middlesbrough AC were placed first, which eventually became a second place that was held for almost half the match. However, tired legs and a lack of competitors soon impacted on the overall standings, with the team slipping down to 6th . More hard work, and even a few PB's, dragged the team back up to 4th; but ultimately it was a little too much for the small team of athletes still standing at the end.

Many athletes put on a brave face for what must have been a disappointing day, especially considering that with just a few of those absent athletes present in the team we would be competing in the Northern First Division next year.

Double winner for the men's team on the track was 16 year old Ben Stephenson who ran a personal best time of 11.10 seconds before winning his specialist 200m event, Another 16 year old Harry Harris won the B 100metres in convincing fashion, while training partner Chris Carson ran a fast 22.60 taking second place in the B 200m. Richard Smith continued his fine return by winning the 400m hurdles in 54.70 seconds. While Nick Phelps took second place in the B 400m hurdles.

In the men's field events Ade Babatunde won the men's triple jump event and placed second in the long jump with a new personal best. Team mate Charlie Dryden had two wins in the B long long jump and triple jump events.

In women's team Ashleigh Wood was again in great form winning the 100m hurdles and the B 100 metres. She then went on to aid the team cause with 4th place in the 200 metres and a third in the long jump. Other double winners in the women's team were Rachel Fairless in the Pole Vault and B sprint hurdles and also from Heather Johnson in the B discus and pole vault events. Chloe Gill was the other individual winner in the B triple jump competition.

Apart from Ashleigh Wood the three busiest athletes of the day were Joe Cox, Catherine Meynell and Ben Daley. Joe Cox scored valuable points for the team in the 800 and 1500 metre events before turning his attention to the Javelin, Whilst Ben Daley competed and scored well in the jump, discus and hammer. Catherine Meynell showed real team spirit by competing in the unusual treble of the 400m, 1500m and hammer. Placing a highly creditable 4th in the latter event.
