Jack Crosby went in defence of the title he won 12 months ago with team mates and training partners Jack Mitchinson and James Savage. Crosby winning the gold medal and leading the club to gold and silver in the under 17 men's event with Mitchinson taking the silver medal, an unfortunate Savage had to withdraw after the first event due to injury
In the first event, the 100 metres hurdles Crosby took the tape in a lifetime best of 13.80 seconds with Mitchinson recording 15.60 seconds. In the long jump Crosby recorded a distance of 6.67 metres. Mitchinson recorded a personal best of 5.42 metres. Going on to the shot putt Crosby threw a distance of 12.62 metres and Mitchinson a personal best of 7.48 metres.
It was second personal best of the day that got the knowledgeable crowd going in the high jump. Going into the competition Crosby had a personal best of 1.76 metres. Bettering his personal best on no fewer than six occasions Crosby finished with a new lifetime best of 1.94 metres. That height also places him in twelfth place in this year UK rankings for the high jump and Mitchinson was also in the form of his life recording his third personal best tof the competition clearing a personal of 1.64 metres.
Going into the final event Crosby needed a time of under 2 minutes 20 seconds to beat the 7 year old championships best and a time of under 2 minutes 11 seconds to beat the National record held by Michael Downie of Scotland. In the event Crosby ultimately paid the price for his heroics in the high jump and with very little rest between events went on to run a time of 2 minutes 30 seconds.
Although missing the National record his performance put him into the number one position in the UK for 2011. Mitchinson finished his campaign with a time of 2 minutes 32 seconds to take the silver medal with a personal best of 2238 points which places him 13 th in the UK.
In the under 17 women's section it was the turn of Charlotte Kessell and Jess Welburn to enter the medal hunt. Winning the first event the 80 metres hurdles in a time of 13.0 seconds Kessell looked a strong contender for the title, with Welburn also in personal best shape running a time of 16.5 seconds. It was a one two for the pair in the long jump with Kessell over 5 metres again with a personal best of 5.28 metres and Welburn just one centimetre short of her best with 4.62 metres.
With good performances in the shot Welburn 6.38 metres and Kessell 6.39 metres, the pair went into the high jump in first and third places. Kessell cleared 1.43 metres with Welburn just behind with a personal best of 1.25 metres. In the final event the 800 metres Kessell finished the championships in style running a best of 2 minutes 50 seconds and Welburn 3 minutes 10 seconds. Those performances meant Kessell took the gold medal and the championship record with a points score of 2591 points which ranks her tenth in the UK and Welburn a well earned bronze medal.
Rachel Carter faced the biggest field of the day when 11 girls from across the north east turned up to contest the under 15 girls pentathlon. Not being phased by the fact that it was the first time she had contested many of the events, Carter ran 14.30 seconds in the sprint hurdles, before recording best of 3.96 metres in the long jump. In the next event the shot putt Carter threw a distance of 5.85 metres to move up into sixth place. A good run in the 800 metres saw Carter record a time of 3 minutes 12 seconds to finish in eight place overall.
The final Middlesbrough AC athlete to travel to Jarrow was Aaron Jeal. Jeal competed in the under 13 boys pentathlon. In his first event he ran a lifetime best of 17.6 seconds were although he sustained a potential championship threatening injury he chose to carry on with the competition.
