28th - 29th June, ESAA Combined Events, NE regional finals Doncaster
The above meeting is the qualifying competition for the ESAA National Combined Events Championship Finals, which take place in Birmingham on the 20th - 21st September 2008.

Ashleigh Wood (Intermediate Girls) and Nick Phelps (Senior Boys), took part in the Doncaster competition, representing Cleveland Schools and both qualified for the finals in Birmingham, but sadly their achievements appear to have had no recognition either locally or even the Power of 10 which is supposed to rank all achievements.  They were a credit to there county and their athletic club.

Ashleigh competed in the Heptathlon 7 events over 2 days and was in the top 3 for the whole of the competition, achieving 3 PB's and gained her 2nd place out of 18 with an excellent score of 4342 points. This would appear to put her in 5th place in the rankings.

Day 1 - 80m Hurdles 11.4, PB High Jump 1.54, Shot 8.58, PB 200m 26.00.
Day 2 - Long Jump 5.62, PB Javelin 23.79, 800m 2.48.1.

Ashleigh has entered the U17 Heptathalon Championships in Birmingham on the 16th- 17th August in preparation for the finals in Birmingham in September.

Nick completed the Decathlon - 10 events over 2 days and was in the top 4 for the whole of the competition, achieving 8 PB's, gained 3rd place with an excellent score of 5389 points in his first decathlon. Nick archived a PB in the Javelin over 30m, but because of a heavy downpour the competition was restarted and this throw did not count! This would have given Nick 2nd place instead of 3rd.

Day 1 - 100m 11.2 PB, Long Jump 5.85 PB, Shot 9.79, PB High Jump 1.72 PB, 400m 51.2 PB.
Day 2 - 100m Hurdles 16.0, PB Discus 19.19, Pole Vault 3.00 PB Javelin 27.40, 1500m 4.39.0 PB.

Middlesbrough AC came a gallant 2nd place behind a rampant Chesterfield who fielded athletes in nearly every event, this sees Chesterfield promoted to the Northern Premier league, congratulations to them on this achievement, commiserations to our own athletes for the effort they have put in this season.

29.06.08, Tees Valley Tigers, the region's junior athletics team.
Finished runners-up to Team Forth Valley in the third round of the NJAL to keep their play-off hopes alive.

Max Alderson was again in outstanding form winning all four throw competitions, including the discus, when he flipped it out to over 40 metres, fine preparation for next week's English Schools Championships at Gateshead.

Chris Smallwood won both sprint events with Charlie Dryden taking the long and triple jumps with further successes from Elliott Jackson, Joe Corrigan and Phil Swall.

Jess Metcalfe also won four throws in the ladies event with Kayleigh Sullivan and Jayme Norton claiming their events, and these three will be in action at the ESAA Championships.

Emma Stokes won both 100m and 200m with Helen Corrigan winning the javelin, although she will contest the hammer at Gateshead.

NYAL Clarville 22.06.08
Well done to all athletes on a fantastic team performance which lead the club to 1st position and what will leave a tense final day (20th July) to try and gain promotion.  The conditions were terrible for all the athletes with a blowing gail, which blew down numerous trees and cancelled both the discus and hammer throws.

Highlights of the day included:

Rachael Highfield and Eleanor Mullen completed the sprint double in the under 13 and under 15 age groups, Kate Welford produced once again in winning the under 17 sprint double with Jess Kennedy claiming both sprint wins in the B race

Alex Grundsman moved up a distance from 800m to 1500m where he won very easily and also a win in the 200m, Shaun McCartney won the under 17 boys 200m and long jump whilst Ashleigh Stone won the womens long jump. Joe Cox and Greg Jackson continued their battle in under 17's 400m with Joe coming out on top on this occasion. Patrick O'Connor was up to his usual self winning under 13 boys hurdles, high jump and 800m

Both Emily Fields and Jessica Wilkinson won the under 15's girls middle distance races in the shape of the 800m and 1500m. Ashleigh Wood warmed up this years English Schools with a comfortable win in the under 17's girls hurdles with team-mate Christina O'Connor in 2nd place.

Also English Schools throwers Ian Swall, Matthew Potts and Rachael Goodier threw fantastically well.

NYAL returns to Clairville on 20th July the last meeting of the season where I hope all athletes can turn out to try gain promotion to the Premier League for next season.

Sofia's Golden Treble
Six young athletes from Teesside representing Durham at the Clubs for Young People, National Athletics Championships in Telford certainly had a day to remember on Saturday.

Representing Middlesbrough's Wellington ABC the six came away with no fewer than fourteen medals including four golds.

Sixteen year old Sofiya Pela-aliyu from Middlesbrough put behind her the recent disappointment of not being selected for the Cleveland Schools athletics team for the forthcoming English School Championships by setting an unprecedented performance by becoming the first Teeside athlete to win three individual Gold Medals on the track when taking first place in the 100, 200, and 300 metres races. Pela-aliyu then returned to be part of the silver medal winning 4 x 100m relay team.

The other Gold medal in performance came from the unlikely source of 12 year old Ashley Gray from Yarm. The Yarm school pupil put in a tremendous performance as a last minute substitute to take the Gold in the boys 200 metres.

Another athlete who would be ruing last weeks terrible weather conditions in Middlesbrough is fifteen year Joe Cox from Ingleby Barwick. Cox who could only manage 53.7 seconds when winning the young athletes match at Clairville stadium last week smashed his personal best fro the distance at Telford to win the Silver medal in a time of 52.50 seconds.

Brother and sister duo Katy and Jack Farrow from Middlesbrough took well earned medals in their track events. Katy taking the silver medal in the 1500m whilst younger brother Jack took bronze in the 800m and sprint relay.

The final member of the group to put in a medal winning performance was Sam Norton from Yarm. Norton younger brother of Cleveland Schools record holder Jayme took the Silver medal over 100 metres before combining with 200 metre winner Gray to take another Silver in the relay event.

The performances of the young athletes enabled the athletes representing Durham to win 5 of the 8 team trophies on offer at the Chamiponships. Team Manager Simon Healey was overwhelmed by the performances and said “its been a great day for the team and the area and the children did us proud”

Northern Athletics senior and under 20 championships
Saw medal winning performances for athletes of Middlesbrough AC ( Mandale ) and other locally based athletes.

Fresh from her personal best of of 4mis 33 secs set at Stretford last week Kirsty Legg returned to Manchester to take the Gold Medal in the under 20 womens 1500m in a time of 4 mins 43 seconds. Taking the Bronze medal in the same race was Legg's training partner Lauren Roche (Gateshead Harriers) in a time of 4 mins 50 seconds.

Middlesbrough AC's Kayleigh Sullivan fresh from her personal best performance in the Cleveland Schools Championships on the saturday had to settle for 5 th place in the Hammer event on the sunday with a performance just below her new seasons best.

In the men's track events Richard Kilty (Gateshead) continued his impressive form winning the 100 metres in 10.63 seconds. The Middlesbrough AC quartet of Nick Phelps, Adam Morrell, Andrew Macguire and Richard Morrell made the finals of their respective events. Phelps finished sixth in the 400m Hurdles whilst Maguire and Adam Morrell finished fourth and fifth respectively in the under 20 800 metres. In the senior 800 metres Richard Morrell repeated the feat of his younger brother in claiming fifth place.

In the field Ade Babatunde repeated his feat of last year by claiming the bronze medal with a distance of 14.07 metres. Charlie Dryden narrowly missed out on a medal in the under 20 Long Jump with a distance of 6.65 metres but returned the next day to take a well earned silver medal in the Triple Jump event with a distance of 13.28 metres.

NYSD Track & Field 03.06.08 Darlington
''The third fixture of the North Yorkshire and South Durham Track and Field League was held at Darlington's Eastbourne Stadium.

Nick Phelps, who had won the man of the match award at the second meeting for his 12.72m triple jump, was again in good form, this time winning the senior men's 400m in 50.9sec, while club colleague Claire Turnbull won the senior ladies event in 62.4sec and she also won the 100m in 13.4sec.

In the field events Ashleigh Wood, who had won the athlete of the match award at the first meeting in the long jump, showed her all round abilities by winning the shot with 8.43m, as well as the 100m in 12.5sec.

Other winners: 300m U-17 ladies K Welford 42.6, 3,000m U-17 menR McGuire 11-38.9, Shot senior men C Meynell 7.83

Match 2 Senior team 07.06.08 Jarrow
Thank you to the athletes and officials that showed up for the senior match at Jarrow on Saturday. The team was hit very badly with many of our athletes absent due to injuries. But our 6 male and 8 female athletes rose to the challenge to cover a total of 49 events between them (27 events plus both relays for the 8 women, and 20 events for the 6 men).

A special thank you to Hayley Braithwaite, Claire Turnbull and Frances Hubbard for competing in as many events as the rules allow, and with the male and female field athletes, helped us to be in 2 nd place after 22 events. Unfortunately, there are only so many events 14 athletes can do, and the lack of numbers resulted in us finishing 4 th overall on the day.

Congratulations to our regular thrower Kayleigh Sullivan for achieving PB's in the Hammer (44.69m), Discus (33.54m) and Javelin (29.99m), lets hope the senior matches continue to be so valuable for you and all the other athletes that have produced good performances for the team and themselves. Also that at the next match, again at Jarrow in 4 weeks, we can produce the team that we all know the club has, and we can then show these other teams the quality that we have at this club.

NYAL 18th May Barnsley
The Middlesbrough AC Young athlete's team enjoyed a successful if controversial weekend when competing at Bingley recently. The team finished in second place. However club officials believe that once the results have been checked and scrutinized first place is a distinct possibility.

The club are presently in fourth place in the league standings with only the first two guaranteed promotion. So a strong performance in the next match at Doncaster this weekend is essential to help to ensure a fighting chance of promotion to the Northern Premier league for the 2009 season.

In the under 13 boy's section winners for the club were Matthew Routh 100 metres, Patrick O'connor 800 metres and High Jump Ashley Grey 800 metres and Shot Putt, Dan Shippey Long Jump and Sam Norton Shot Putt. For the under 13 Girls Rachel Highfield scored a sprint double winning the 75 and 150 metres, Laura Simpson winning over 75metres and Kim Carson and Hannah Maclaren winning the 800 metres and High Jump respectively.

Moving up to the under 15 age group Richard Hodgson and Donald Hall were in commanding form in the boys sprints winning both sprint races with ease. In the discus Ian Swall won with an impressive throw by over 5 metres and Fola Ajegkibe was another good points scorer in the winning the Shot Putt. The Middlesbrough AC girls were also in fine form in this age category with another sprint double coming from Hannah Seagrave in the B 100 and 200 metres and her training partner Eleanor Mullen winning the a 100m in a very fast time. Emily Fields and Lauren Cuggy were outstanding in winning their 800 metre races in style. While Jess Wilkinson and Catherine Meynell won their races at 1500 metres.

At under 17 level the clubs track athletes showed their dominance by winning every flat track race in which the four athletes competed. Greg Jackson won the double in the 100 and 400 metres, Shaun McCartney winning the 100 and 200 metres and also the Long Jump. Nikhi Ncube had impressive runs winning the 400 metres and 200 metres while Joe Cox claimed wins in the 200 and 800 metres. In the field Ben Daley had a double winning the Shot and Javelin events. Completing this section for the boys Greg Jackson put in a fine performance winning the B Long Jump.

Not to be outdone by the boys the under 17 Girls section contributed greatly to the clubs points tally with no fewer than eleven wins. Kate Welford gained a fast sprint double over 100 and 200 metres and won the B shot event. Jess Kennedy winning the B 100 metres in under 13 seconds. Ashleigh Wood was again in excellent form winning the B 200m and winning the A Shot, Hurdles and Triple Jump. The latter being a lifetime best performance, which lifts her into the UK top 20 for the event along with team-mates Chloe Gill and Ashleigh Stone. Another winner was Rebecca Macguire who took the 1500 metre race. Multi event athlete Christina O'Connor was also a multi event winner in taking the B sprint hurdles and setting a new personal best winning the B Triple Jump.

With a full compliment of officials, some of us were able to enjoy a lazy day as spectators although our busy team manager seemed to have a "twin" with her as she was constantly 'to and fro' to "declations" and appearing to be in two places at once, checking and supporting all the team members.

The sun was out for a change, but performances were affected by the strong wind and athletes quickly resorted to filling in events to gain points. We had a smaller team with some of our Under 17s. who had travelled to the first match, competing at the Northern Championships at Wigan. But with athletes trying events for the first time and all gelling as a team we maintained our respectable 3rd match position behind the two very strong Scottish clubs.

Northern Athletics U17/U15 Champs 2008 Robin Park, Wigan 24/25 May
The ladies of Middlesbrough AC (Mandale) were in fine form at the North of England under 17 Championships held at Wigan at the weekend.

The small group of 5 athletes won three gold medals one bronze and a fourth place.

Gold medallists on the first day came in due to the form of Kayleigh Mills in the under 17 Hammer throw and Chloe Gill in the Triple Jump. The clubs bronze medallist on the track came from Jayme Norton in the under 17 Girls 300m and in doing so Norton ran a personal best and was well inside the qualifying time for July's English schools championships at Gateshead. Unluckiest athlete was Ashleigh Stone who narrowly missed out on a medal in the Triple jump taking fourth place. On the second day the clubs only competitor was Ashleigh Wood and it was Ashleigh Wood who dealt with the pressure of being fastest entrant to claim the Gold in a time just outside her UK best leading performance of 11.52 seconds.

NYSD Darlington 13th May
There were several outstanding track results at the second fixture of the North Yorkshire and South Durham Track and Field League held at Darlington's Eastbourne Stadium.

Middlesbrough AC athletes again dominated the sprints with Rachel Highfield taking the Under-13 Girls 200m in 28.4secs, club colleagues Eleanor Mullen (27.6) won the Under 15 race, Ashleigh Wood (26.2) the Under-17 race and Claire Turnbull won the senior ladies' race in 26.9.

Andrew Maguire posted a fast early season time of 1:57.3 as he won the Senior Men's race. Ashleigh Wood, who had won the “Athlete of the Match” award in the opening fixture, for her leap of 5.32m in the Long Jump, was again in fine form. Ashleigh won both the Under-17 Javelin with a throw of 24.68m and the Triple Jump with 10.55m.

North East Outdoor Track and Field Championships
Athletes from Middlesbrough AC, as well as other Teesside based athletes amassed over sixty medals 30 of them Gold and seven championship records between them.

Outstanding performence of the weekend was record breaking sprinter Richard Hodgson. Fourteen year old Hodgson won the 100m and 200m breaking the Championship Best performances in both events recording times of 11.21 and 22.60 respectively. The 200m time put Hodgson into 22 nd place in the United kingdom all time list.

For the senior men Silver medallists, Glen Blenkinsopp Pole Vault.

At under 20 level the Middlesbrough AC quartet of Adam Mitchell (5,000m), Charlie Dryden (Long Jump), Nick Phelps (400m Hurdles) and Joe Corrigan (High Jump) all competed with distinction to win Gold in their respective events. Other male medallists in this group were Nick Phelps (bronze shot silver javelin and triple jump), Joe Corrigan (Silver long jump).

For the under 20 women Gold medals were won due to terrific performances by Kirsty Legg in the 1500m, Faye Winspear at 100m, and Kayleigh Sullivan in the Hammer. Sullivan's performance in the Hammer was also a new championship best performance. Sullivan added to her medal tally with two silvers and a bronze in the Javelin, Discus and Shot respectively. In the women's triple jump Jayde Foster took a well earned bronze medal. In the under 17 age group there were no Gold medals for the young men of Teesside but there were encouraging medal winning performances from Grant Hawkins and Joe Cox. Hawkins took the silver medal in the 2000m event and Cox the bronze over 400 metres.

The under 17 women took four gold medals and set two championship best performances in the process. Leading the way was Ashleigh Wood who took the Gold and the record in the Long Jump, she then added the 80 metre hurdles title to her tally before taking the silver over 100 metres. In the field Helen Corrigan was in superb form breaking the championship record in the Hammer. The other Gold medallist in this age group was Sofiya Pela-Aliu, Aliu ran a controlled and relaxed race to set a new personal best in winning the 300 metre title. Silver medallists for the under 17 women were Chloe Gill in the Triple Jump and Kate Welford who set a new personal best in the 200m. Ashleigh Stone completed the medal tally in this category by taking the bronze medal in the Triple Jump.

In the Under 15 Vanessa Jacques was a multi Gold Medallist winning both the Shot Putt and Javelin titles and also claiming the silver medal in the discus. Emily Fields ran a superbly judged race to win the 800 metres. Other medallist were Jess Wilkinson and Eleanor Mullen. Wilkinson won the silver medal over the distance of 3,000m whilst Mullen took a brace of bronze medals in the 100 and 200 metre events. In the youngest age category (under 13's) Patrick O'Connor was again in superlative form winning three Gold medals in the Long Jump, High Jump and the 75 m hurdles. O'Connor setting a championship best performance time in the Hurdles. Joining him on the Gold medal trail was Matthew Routh who won the 100 metre title in the closest of finishes. Routh also took the silver medal at 200 metres. Sam Norton won the bronze medal in the Shot Putt.  Sole medallist for the under 13 girls was Rachel Highfield, who took the silver medals over 100 and 200 metres.

The next 'Tees Valley Tigers' (TVT) is Sunday 25th May back at Carlisle, Sheepmount Stadium.
We need as many u20's as possible for this match as it falls on the same day as 15's/17's North of England champs at Wigan.

The u17's played a big part in the first 'TVT' match and they will be greatly missed, but hopefully we can get all of the u20's in the club to come and compete and have a great day out.

We also need any officials who are free that day to come and help if possible, officials are an intregal part of matches and points are given to full complements we provide.

Thank you to all those who competed or helped with the senior match at York on Saturday 3rd May. It was a difficult day due to late changes to the timetable and several athletes missing from our first match, but everyone worked hard for themselves and the team, with every athlete completing at least 2 events, and some doing much more. Next time we'll get Gateshead's A/B team.

NYAL Jarrow Sunday 4th May
First season manager Andrew Maguire and stand in manager Julie Magurie steered our NYAL team to first place, with a fantastic 72 clear points of nearest rivals at Monkton Stadium in a double header match. Subject to scrutiny this places the club 3rd overall in Northern One East.

All athletes where a credit too the club throughout the day and I would just like to congratulate the whole team on a fantastic performance on winning the 1st YAL match of the season.

Young sprinters Rachael Highfield (U13) and Matthew Routh (U13) started the day with wins in the 150m and 200m followed by both winning the 100m.

Last years AAA' finalist Ben Stephenson (U17) showed good early season form in taking the sprint double with fellow runner Chris Carsson going well in both. Donald Hall also had wins in the U15 age group.

One of the stars of the day was 14 year old Alex Grundsman who won the 400m and 800m which put him in the top 5 in the U.K. for both events.

James Dreiderick, Ben Daley, Matthew Potts, Lee Green and Ian Swall all threw exceptionally well gaining numerous wins for themselves and the club.

Jessica Metcalfe and Helen Corrigan also went well in their respective areas.

Kate Welford completed the double in both 100 and 200 metres for U17 Girls. Ashley Stone and Jess Kennedy also had good wins in U17 age group.

Ashley Wood (U17) was up to her usual winning ways by winning the long jump, hurdles and high jump.

Middle distance runners Nick Wooley, Rebecca Maguire, Lauren Cuggy and Jess Wilkinson all performed well in their events.

Patrick O'Connor (U13) showed his talent in taking in the 800metres, high jump and hurdles backed up by his sister Christina who also performed well.

Jayme Norton and Sofia Pelia both ran quick early season times in U17 Girls 300metres.

Joe Cox won the U17 Boys 400m and 800m followed by training partner Nikki Ncube in both.

Race of the day came in the U15 girls 800metres as Emily Fields pipped team-mate Amelia Mack on the line, however Amelia was harshly disqualified but put that behind her in winning the high jump.

All relay teams did fantastically well and earned the team a final product of a well deserved 72 point margin win.

Unfortunately we are not able to provide a coach for this match, but if anybody is unable to find transport to the match, whether you are an athlete, official, coach or spectator, please let me know as soon as possible and I'll do all I can do help.

Tees Valley Tigers athletics team
Made a solid start to their outdoor Track and Field season at Carlisle this weekend. The team that is a composite team from New Marske Harriers, Middlesbrough AC and Hartlepool Burn Road Athletic Club finished in third place behind to very strong Scottish composite teams that between them boast 9 separate clubs in their make up. The team was ably led by captains Charlie Dryden and Jayme Norton. Dryden had four individual victories winning the 100 metres, Long Jump, Triple Jump and Pole Vault. In the women's events Norton claimed third place 400m with a new personal best performance.

In other men's events Nick Phelps won his specialist event in the 400m hurdles and also won the b Triple Jump. In the field Max Alderson had trio of wins in the Shot Putt, Discus and b Javelin. Phelps and Alderson also scored valuable points in the Pole Vault and Hammer respectively. Andrew Maguire and Ben Daley finished in second place for the team in their specialist events of the 800 metres and Javelin.

In the ladies team sprinter Faye Winspear fine tuned her preparations for next weeks British Universities Championships with wins in the 100 and 200 metres. Making it a clean sweep for the team in the sprints Jess Kennedy and Ashleigh Wood won the b events in the 100 metres and 200 metres. Kayleigh Mills had a busy day with wins in the Javelin and Shot Putt and second place in the Hammer. Other victories for women's team came from Ashleigh Wood with a personal best in the Long Jump, Jess Metcalfe in the Discus and Ashleigh Stone and Olivia Cook in the Triple Jump.

Tees Valley Tigers compete in the Junior League, (NJAL) Tyne League which is made up of Team Forth Valley, Northern Rivers, Team Tyne & Wear, Team Glasgow, South Lanarkshire Athletics and ourselves.

Tees Valley Tigers is a combination of athletics from Mandale, New Maske, Burn Road and Darlington Quakers, the competition is open to Junior athletes who will be given priority, but under 17 year old athletes can compete, either in the team if there is a vacancy or as a guest, this is a fantastic opportunity to gain competitive experience.

13.04.08 Anne Marie Readshaw Memorial Open.
Middlesbrough AC (Mandale) athletes were in top form at the Shildon Open Meeting held at the weekend.

In the youngest age groups the club had the two outstanding performers in the under 13 boys section multi eventer Patrick O'Connor won 3 gold medals in the Long Jump, 800metres and the High Jump. O'Connor's performance in the High Jump moved him into top position in the UK rankings for 2008. To complete his medal tally O'Connor finished 2 nd in the 200m. For the girls in this age group Rachel Highfield set two personal bests in completing a sprint double in the 100metres and 200 metres.

In the under 15 boys age category Donald Hall had a comfortable victory in the 200m winning by over a second with a new best time. For the under 15 girls Emily Fields produced a solid performance to take the 800 metres. In the field Catherine Meynell convincingly won the Shot Putt to move into second place in the North East rankings. Gaining second places for the club were Amelia Mack (Long Jump) and Eleanor Mullen (200m).

For the under 17 men sprinter Ben Stephenson showed impressive early season form winning the sprint double at 100 metres and 200 metres. Whilst Grant Hawkins was equally impressive in winning the 3000 metre race.

The closest race of the day came in the under 17 women's section where athletes from Middlesbrough AC completed a clean sweep in the 200m, the trio led home by the in form Kate Welford included Ashleigh Wood and Jayme Norton respectively. Wood was in fine form in the field events winning the High Jump and the Long Jump. Finishing off a good day for the clubs under 17 ladies were Kate Welford and Jess Kennedy who finished 2 nd and 3 rd in the 100 metres.

At senior level the club also provided winner in the shape of Faye Winspear and Liam McDonnell. Winspear was again in great form winning bot the 100 and 200 metres. Whilst Emma Stokes finished 3 rd in the 100 metres. In the senior men's age group under 20 athlete Liam McDonnell was again impressive over 400 metres with an easy win and Joe Corrigan claimed second place in the Long Jump.
