2009 SportsRoundup Archive
Ending this years SportsRoundup, The Department of Health, has teamed up with the Ramblers charity to promote Christmas Day walking, a stroll of just one mile could make a difference. The public have been urged to have an active festive break, by going for a walk on Christmas Day to burn off the calories consumed during lunch. The typical Christmas menu of turkey and pudding adds up to 1,500 calories - half of a man's recommended daily intake and three-quarters of a woman's. The government urged people to take to the streets, fields and beaches and take a stroll after eating.
Comment well there's also the option of Friday 1st of January 2010 The Morpeth Road Race two days later on Sunday 3rd of January The Old Monks Multi Terrain Race.
Post Script, you might not know I was diagnosed as a Type 2 diabetic in the summer, so to help rewind the damage that this has already done the plan is to hit the track. The goal for 2010 to enter the Middlesbrough 10k, kick starting in January with the help of the coaches of the club, see you all on the track Thursday evenings. To highlight Type 2 Diabetes I've started an information section, beginning with Diabetes and Exercising. more>>

Chairman's end of year round up and aspirations for the coming 2010 outdoor track and field campaign:
Dear Members.
As the New Year approaches we can look back on 2009 with some pride. All our League teams did very well indeed and this means a big ‘thank you' not only to our excellent athletes but to our hardworking volunteer Coaches, Team Managers, Officials, Committee members and helpers, working together has produced very good results.
Teamwork led us in the “McCain” Young Athletes Team to finish a close 4th in the 16 team league. This league has now been restructured for 2010 and the proposed format should suit our Club in that it has eliminated the very long bus journeys. We should therefore be in a position to dominate the league and win through to the Premier League for 2011.
Our Junior (U20) team did a fantastic job by not only winning the Pennine League but winning the Northern Promotion match in a nail biting finish to clinch a place in the Premier League for 2010.
The Senior North of England League 2NE team did really well and won through to the promotion match but a shortage in key events meant we finished in a creditable mid position.
Our Cross Country teams are growing slowly in number with first class individual performances developing. Again we must thank the organising group who also brave all weathers to erect the (now very new and substantial) Club Tent.
The Club Awards Evening in November was a great success with over 200 attending to join in what was a celebration of our athletes' endeavors during 2009, Chris Tomlinson (UK Long Jump Record Holder 2002 to 2009) involvement as the presenter of the awards was very well received.
We must build on the solid foundation that has been generated over the past several years not only for the Club to progress but to allow potential Regional, National and International athletes a chance to reach their potential, without a successful club they may never have the opportunity. Our Awards Evening in November showed that we have some outstanding and potentially outstanding talent ready to be launched onto the athletics scene.
Finally I would like to call on any parent or ex-athlete who feels they could assist the Club in any way to make themselves known to any committee member, more hands will definitely make less work for all.
May I wish you all a “Very Merry Festive Season and a Happy, Safe and Healthy New Year”
Charles Stuart, Chairman Middlesbrough AC (Mandal

Your never too old to compete in athletics, take Ruth Frith at 100 years old who registered for five events,
(Yes you read that right, five events) – discus, hammer, shot put, weight pentathlon and weight throw – at the
Sydney 2009 World Masters Games.
Reuters India. All eyes were on Ruth Frith, from Brisbane, as she arrived for day two of the World Masters Games, hoping to win gold in the shot put and feeling pretty confident as she was the only competitor in the over-100s category. Her 4.07m throw didn't just win her gold, but also broke a world record. "As long as I didn't foul I was going to win it". Great-grandmother Ruth is also a keen hammer and javelin thrower and believes other pensioners should follow her example. Despite her age, Ruth said she has no plans to retire just yet. Ruth contested her first World Masters Athletics Championships at the age of 74. Watch Ruth in action. more>>
