Northern Athletics Indoor Championships Sheffield 17th January
LITTLE RACHEL'S BIG DAY
By Rick Betts:
The diminutive figure of Rachel Highfield provided the highlight of the weekend for Teesside athletes competing at the North of England athletics championships in Sheffield at the weekend.
Highfield Middlesbrough AC (Mandale) was competing in the under 15 girls 200 meters and despite being the smallest competitor on the track she proved she improved her indoor personal best in all three rounds winning her heat and semi final in fine style, before winning taking the gold medal in the final in a time of 26.06 seconds to put he top in the UK rankings. Highfield had earlier won Middlesbrough AC (Mandales's) first medal of the championships when taking the silver medal in the under 15 girls 60 meters in a personal best of 7.96 seconds.
The club took their second gold medal when triple jumper Ade Babatunde added the senior men's triple jump title to the north east title he won last weekend, with a leap of 14.94 meters.
Three more Teesside based athletes won gold for their efforts at the EIS with some fine early season performances of the weekend they were Richard Kilty and Ashleigh Wood (Gateshead Harriers) and Jonathan Taylor (Morpeth).
Wood smashed her previous best performance when winning the 60 metre hurdles in a very fast 8.78 seconds, defeating seasoned international and Great Britain junior heptathlon champion Katrina Thompson in the process. Great Britain international Kilty eased through his first two rounds of the 200 metre before turning on the style in the final to win as he liked in a UK rankings leading 21.41 seconds. Jonathan Taylor returned from illness to run a strong race to not only defend his 3000 metre title but also to run a Championship Best Performance time of 8 minutes 10.77 seconds.
Teesside based Rabah Yousif (Newham and Essex) and Yusuf Aliu (Gateshead) had to give second best to Andrew Robertson (Sale) in the senior men's 60 metre sprint with Yousif taking second place in 6.94 seconds and Aliu fourth in a personal best of 7.02 seconds.
Harry Harris Middlesbrough AC (Mandale) ran consistently well to lower his personal best in all three rounds, culminating in a silver medal in the under 20 men's 60 metres in 7.04 seconds. Whilst Patrick O'Connor excelled by beating his previous best in the under 15 boys high jump recording a height of 1.72 metres taking the silver.
Soute Nyananyo (Newham & Essex) ran well to claim fourth place in the men's 60m hurdles in a new personal best of 8.15 seconds as did Adam Morrell Middlesbrough AC (Mandale) and Andrew Wiles (New Marske) in the under 20 men's 800m and senior 3000 metres respectively.Club members represented were:
Nick Phelps, Charlie Dryden, Faye Winspear, Ben Stephenson, Adam Morrell, Ashleigh Stone, Patrick O'Connor plus
Ade Babatunde winning GOLD Senior mens TJ 14.94
Harry Harris SILVER in U20 60m 7.04
STAR : Rachel Highfield GOLD in U15 girls 200m 26.06 and SILVER in Under 15 60m 7.96.
Chairmans comment
Rachel Highfield ran in the U15 age group and had a fantastic Northern Championships at the EIS Venue, Sheffield on Saturday & Sunday. After winning the heat and semi in the 60m in pb of 7.99s she went on the take 2nd in the final in a new pb of 7.96s. This was followed by wins in all three rounds of the 200m with a great pb of 26.06s in the final. As indoor times can be slower than outdoor this bodes well for a very good summer track season. I think the Club should offer her a big congratulations. NB Harry Harris ran a very good three rounds to win the 60m in a pb of 7.04s to take 2nd place beating the the Northern 200m Champion Liam Clowes in the process. Very well done to Harry.Full results. more>>
North Eastern Counties AA Indoor Championships 9 - 10 January
In what has proved to be a momentous starting weekend Teesside athletes were in scintillating form in the North East Indoor Championships.
Only a few of the Teesside athletes entered made their journey in the snowy conditions to compete at Gateshead's indoor arena. Those who did were rewarded with personal best a medal winning performances.
Leading the way on the Saturday in the field events was Middlesbrough AC's Ade Babatunde, despite having not being able to train at Clairville Stadium for three weeks due to the weather Babatunde proved that like Ricky Stevenson training in the snow in a field is no bad substitute.
Babatunde won his specialist triple jump event by adding almost a metre to his own Championship Best when recording a distance of 15 metres 27 centimetres. This was also a personal best by over 40 centimetres and puts him at the top of the early season UK rankings.
The area's other Gold medal winners on the first day were 13 year old Matthew Jeal (Middlesbrough AC) and Ashleigh Wood (Gateshead Harriers). Jeal threw a lifetime best of 10.35 metres to claim the title, while Hartlepool athlete Wood jumped over 5 metres to win the under 20 women's long jump.
Middlesbrough AC provided 3 double medallists in the field events in the shape of Jordan Gill silver under 17 men's triple jump and bronze in the long jump, Charlie Myers bronze under 15 boys high and long jumps and 11 Aaron Jeal who claimed well earned bronze medals in the under 13 long jump and high jump.
To end the first day Ashleigh Stone took the silver medal in the under 20 women's long jump whilst Charlie Dryden repeated the feat taking silver in the senior men's long jump.
Sunday's action saw the turn of the track athletes with the sprints and sprint hurdles taking place.
Main attraction was Richard Kilty (Gateshead Harriers) Kilty from Stockton was in his first race since inflicting a shock defeat on seasoned Great Britain international Tyrone Edgar in an outdoor 60 metre race at Gateshead last September. Joining Kilty in the 60 metres heats were team mate Yusuf Aliu and Middlesbrough AC's Charlie Dryden.
After easing through their heats hopes were high for a Teesside 1-2-3 in the the final however the trio had to be happy with first, second and fourth as Kilty sped away from the field to win as he liked in a very fast 6.81 seconds with Aliu making a welcome return to form taking the silver medal and Dryden in fourth place.
There were an abundance of medals for the athletes of Middlesbrough AC in the days other sprint finals. Pride of place went to Rachel Highfield in the under 15 girls 60 metres who not content with breaking the Championships best in her heat then went on to break the 8 second barrier in the final while taking gold and going to the top of the national rankings.
In the under 15 boys 60 metres Fezan Mughal and Leon Hatton took the gold and silver medals with Mughal running a fast 7.87 seconds to Hattons 8.06 seconds. Patrick O'Connor made up for missing the Saturday competition by taking the silver medal in the hurdles.
In the under 17 age group Eleanor Mullen made it a hat trick of wins for the Cyril Banks, Dave Welford coached sprinters when taking the gold medal in the women's 60 metres.
Harry Harris was in fine form taking over a tenth of second of his previous best time when winning the gold in 7.13 seconds. Ashleigh Stone ran well to take the silver on the under women's race whilst at senior level Faye Winspear prevailed in a tight finish to win the gold.Athletics By: Rick Betts
Day One comments by Charles Stuart
Rachel Highfield in setting Champ best 'Grade 1' U15, 60m performance of 7.99s also ran the fastest time by any female athlete competing. As usual her run was as smooth as silk and a pleasure to watch.
Elleanor Mullan, running powerfully, won the U17 women 60m in 8.31s in a hotly contested race.
Fezan Mughal won the U15 Boys 60m almost 2m clear of 2nd place Leon Hatton, Harry Harris ran a powerful 60m in 7.13s to finish well clear of James Andrew, Jarrow & Hebburn, who ran 7.29s.
Ben Stephenson, who is not eligible to compete in the NEAA Champs as he qualifies for Yorkshire, won the U20 Open 60m in 7.29s
Faye Winspear easily took the senior Ladies title with a smooth running 8.06s and in the U20 Ladies race
Ashleigh Stone was only pipped at the post by 2 hundreths of a second by Darlington Harriers fast finishing Lorna Goldsmith. (Lorna is a 2nd Claim Club member and competes in our Junior League team)
The above performances were exceptional in that many had not been able to train on any track since before Christmas, very well done indeed to all. I did not attend the Field Champs on Saturday so have no first hand info.Well done to all the other club athletes not mentioned that completed detailed results can be found here>>

u11 boys 600m 4th- Aaron Jeal in 2.18.9, 5th- James Warwick in 2.19.0Indoor Grand Prix series Round 1, Sunday 8th of November at Jarrow`s Monkton Stadium.
Fourteen members of Mandale's U11 runners travelled up to Jarrow to provide an exciting morning for the club. The dry misty morning in Teesside was left behind and torrential rain greeted them as they approached Tyneside making the indoor venue all the more welcome. As Ray Oliver ticked off the names of more and more of his runners as they arrived his smile grew broader and he was delighted to discover that six of the nine U10 boy's entries were from his own squad.
The U9 girls got the morning started with the 60 meter sprints. Isabelle Day came fifth in a field of thirteen and a time of 10.7, just missing out on a place in the final. Max Eldabe won third place in race 2 of the U9 boys with a time of 11.1. In the U10 girls Hannah Jeal represented the club finishing 7th in 11.1 seconds. Then came the Mandale U10 boys. Ryan Nimmo, 9.2, Dominic Swinson, 9.9, and Jamie Grace, 10, all earned a place in the final with Josh Allen running a brilliant 9.7 seconds, only missing on the final due to the winner of each heat and fastest loser rule. Ben Palmer and Isaac Suleman also competed well in an event strongly dominated by Mandale boys. The final was won by Ryan with Dominic and Jamie coming third and fourth.
In the U11 girls a time of 10.1 earned Polly Day a place in the final and fourth position and the 60m was brought to an end by Aaron Jeal who ran a brilliant race to win second place in the U11 boys with a time of 9.4.
The U9s then competed in the 300m with Isabelle Day gaining fourth place with a time of 1.08.3 and Maya Suleman coming a very close fifth with 1.08.6.
A poignant reminder of the troubles in the wider world interrupted proceedings as two minutes silence was observed at eleven o'clock and service men and women, past and present were remembered.
Max Eldabe completed his 300m in 1.11.6 earning him seventh position in a large field of sixteen. Hannah Jeal carried the light in the U10 girls running a good 450m in 1.8.6 and was followed by a fantastic result for Mandale in the U10 boys with Josh Allen, Dominic Swinson, Ryan Nimmo and Isaac Suleman taking the first to four places. Ben Palmer and Jamie Grace also ran strong races coming in sixth and seventh respectively. With only the U11 left to finish off the morning, Polly Day put in a good performance despite her fears before Aaron Jeal brought the event to a close on a high collecting fourth position in the 600m with a time of 2.21.2.
This was a marvelous opening event for Mandale and there is much to look forward to for the rest of the season. Well done to all involved, you did brilliantly!! It was really great to see so many of our minor athletes competing and our thanks go out to Ray Oliver and Paul Kitson for their encouragement to our club`s future stars. We hope to see even more in round 2 on 6th December.
