History behind the Cryil Elliott
Cyril was a popular figure amongst the younger members of the club who he coached and benefited from his expertise. Cyril was the only member of the club then called Mandale Harriers to be awarded life membership, and passed away in 1986 at the age of 63.

Cyril Elliott Open Meeting - Event Report

Over 200 athletes from across the region took part this weekend in what is now the traditional opening event of the local athletics season, the Cyril Elliott Memorial open meeting at Clairville Stadium.

The event was sponsored by Mack Solicitors, Track and Field Sports Ltd and Pickering Print with support from Start Fitness and Event Photography. Despite the disruption to training schedules this winter, there was a good turnout and some very encouraging early season performances

At the mens U20/Senior level, there were fine winning performances from Christian Carson in the 100m and Charlie Dryden in the 300m, both Middlesbrough AC. Elliot Jackson from New Marske took the honours in the 800m. In the field events, Graeme Level from Gateshead had a convincing win in the Discus as did David Dowson in the Shot. Ryan MacDowell from Border won a closely fought Hammer competition. 

In the ladies U/20/Senior level section a close finish saw Rebekah Wilmshurst from Durham win the 100m from a trio of Middlesbrough AC athletes led by Ashleigh Stone. The same happened again in the 300m. Emma Masson from Gateshead claimed 1st place from another trio of Middlesbrough AC athletes, this time led by Rachel Mitchinson. Emma Toogood from Durham won the 800m from Emma Williams.

In the U17 boys age group Richard Hodgson Middlesbrough AC showed good early season form to win the 100m supported by teammate Dominic Nobbs in 3rd place. Dominic later went on to win the 300m with fellow Middlesbrough AC athlete Michael Dring finishing third. Alex Hamer won the Triple Jump with 2nd place going to Jordan Gill.

In the U17 girls age group Georgia Dawson from Gateshead came out on top in a close finishing 100m whilst Hannah Segrave Middlesbrough AC held on to win the 300m. In the 800m there was a strong performance from Charmaine Porter Jarrow & Hebburn to take 1st place. Charlotte McEwan and Catherine Meynell finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Hammer which was won by Katy Barnard from Border.

Matthew Jeal took the bronze in the U15 boys 200m and went on to show his all round ability by winning the Discus and Shot Putt. Charlie Pasco from New Marske was a convincing winner of 1200m with Liam Watson in second place.

The fastest female performer of the day was in the U15 girls 100m in the form of Rachael Highfield, who gave a dominant display of sprinting. In the 1200m Emma Wortley showed a great turn of speed in the finishing straight to secure an impressive early season victory. There were also wins for Sophie Passmore and Adele Cooke in the Long Jump and Hammer.

Wheelchair athlete of the meeting has to go to Jade Jones of New Marske who as an U15 girl did the double in the 100m and 400m against both male and female athletes of all age groups, an outstanding performance.

Star performer in the U13 boys was Sam Day of Middlesbrough AC, completing the triple by winning the 600m, 150m and Long Jump. Aaron Jeal won the 75m sprint and Hannah Marshall led from the front to come home first in the U13 girls 600m. 

In the youngest age group Ryan Nimmo was a double winner in the U11 boys 60m and 600m. Beth Leckie from Gateshead had a 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the 60m, 600m and long Jump.
