New Coach Development Initiative Launched
England Athletics has launched the National Coach Development Programme in an event that saw world class names in coaching presenting to coaches from across England. For the launch of the programme 150 coaches who work in a range of disciples across the jumps, sprints, combined events and endurance came together at Birmingham University to hear presentations by Frank Dick, former coach to Daley Thompson and President of the European Coaches Association, and Malcolm Arnold, former coach to Colin Jackson and now UKA National Coach for Hurdles.
The Coach Development Programme in England sees a network of coaches supported by a team of National Coach Mentors (NCMs). The National Coach Mentors lead the National Coach Development Programme which has a focus on event specific support and development, but also covers topics specific to the needs of the coaches in other more generic areas.
The launch event saw England Athletics' Head of Coaching Richard Wheater speak about the principles of the programme and England Athletics' aim to support the development of coaches at all levels. Chair of England Athletics, John Graves, and UKA head of coaching and development, Kevin Tyler, also spoke in support of the programme, particularly in terms of the close working relationship which England Athletics and UKA enjoy.
Frank Dick gave a presentation on the importance of coaches working together, planning for the long term and how best to take responsibility for the athletes that coaches support. Malcolm Arnold then spoke about his views on the critical issue of transitioning young talent to Senior success.
Head of coaching Richard Wheater said: “There is a huge amount of work going into coach development across England. These events show a visible commitment from England Athletics to making the best possible provision for our coaches and to bringing in the highest level of expert to support this learning. “What events such as this also offer is the opportunity for many of our best coaches to meet up and share ideas with one another. This peer-to-peer education and the desire to learn are vital aspects of both the National and Local Coach Development Programmes. “Our national coach mentors are also having a lot of involvement with the coaches they are responsible for on a one-to-one basis. “It is great to see the desire and ambition of all of these coaches and their willingness to share expertise, ideas and experience to support one another as we work together to move the sport forwards.
Three coaches from the North East have been included in the initial part of the scheme they are Jacqui Pringle (Gateshead) and Rick Betts (Middlesbrough AC) Triple Jump and Chris Boundy (Gateshead) Pole Vault.
England Athletics have announced there Autumn programme of coaching courses, new courses will be added on a regular basis so please keep a check on the there web site for further details. more>>
